Getting started
What Little Chemist is, whether it is free, and how it relates to Little Alchemy.
What is Little Chemist?
Little Chemist is a free browser crafting game in the style of Little Alchemy. You start with four elements — air, earth, fire, and water — and combine them two at a time to discover new ones. Each discovery unlocks further combinations, and the goal is to find all 157 elements, from mud and lava to robots, dragons, and galaxies.
Is Little Chemist free to play online?
Yes. littlechemist.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, and there are no interruptive video ads, premium tiers, or paywalls. Open the page and the four base elements are ready.
How is this different from Little Alchemy and Little Alchemy 2?
Little Chemist is an independent game inspired by the same idea: combine two elements to make a third. It uses its own hand-built tree of 157 elements and its own artwork and interface, with a modern dark theme, a search box, unlimited hints, and a workspace that pans on mobile. It is not affiliated with Little Alchemy or Little Alchemy 2.
Do I need to download an app or create an account?
No. The game is the website — a 100% browser-based build with no app store download and no sign-up. Your discoveries are saved locally in your browser, so there is no login to manage.
Where did the combine-elements genre come from?
The idea of merging two things into a third goes back to the "alchemy" flash games of the late 2000s. Little Alchemy popularised the clean two-element version in 2010, and Little Alchemy 2 followed in 2017. Little Chemist is a modern browser take on that format with its own element set.
Gameplay and rules
Combining elements, how many there are, hints, and how a game ends.
How do you play Little Chemist?
Drag an element from the library onto the workspace, then drag a second element on top of it. If the pair has a recipe, the two elements merge into a new one and it is added to your library. If they do not react, nothing happens. Keep combining new elements with old ones until the whole tree is discovered.
How many elements are there?
There are 157 elements in total, including the four you start with. Completion is shown as a percentage, and discovering the last element plays a short win chime — but you can keep playing and rebuilding on the workspace afterwards.
Can I run out of an element?
No. Elements in the library are templates — placing water on the workspace does not use it up. Any combination you have made before can be made again as many times as you like.
What do hints do?
A hint highlights two elements you already own that combine into something you have not discovered yet. It never reveals more than one step, and there is no limit on how many hints you can use.
Is there a score or a timer?
No. Little Chemist has no score, no timer, and no failure state. The only measure of progress is how many of the 157 elements you have found.
Can one pair make more than one element?
In Little Chemist each pair produces a single result, so the recipe table is predictable. Some elements can be reached by more than one pair, which gives you options when a branch stalls.
What are the controls?
Drag to place and to combine, double-click a library element to place a copy, and drag an element off the workspace to discard it. On the keyboard, H is a hint, C clears the workspace, M toggles sound, and / jumps to the library search.
Combos and strategy
Where to start, how to open the big branches, and what to do when you are stuck.
What should I combine first?
Try every pair of the base four, including an element with a copy of itself: fire and water make steam, earth and water make mud, earth and fire make lava, air and fire make energy, air and air make pressure, and water and water make a puddle. Those six results branch into most of the tree.
How do I get life?
Combine mud and plant to make a swamp, then combine energy with that swamp. Plant comes from rain on earth, and rain comes from a cloud (air plus steam) combined with water. Once you have life, pair it with land for animals and with mud for humans.
I am stuck — what now?
Take each element you have found in the last few minutes and combine it with air, earth, fire, water, and your other hub elements like stone, tool, life, and human. If that turns up nothing, use a hint; it always points to a pair you can already build.
What is the fastest way to open the tree?
Prioritise hub elements: stone, metal, and tool for the materials branch; cloud and rain for weather and plants; swamp and life for biology; human for civilization; and space for astronomy. Each one unlocks a large cluster of recipes.
Do doubles really matter?
Yes. Combining an element with a copy of itself is a real move: air plus air is pressure, water plus water is a puddle, plant plus plant is a tree, tree plus tree is a forest, and house plus house is a village.
Devices, saving, and accounts
Mobile play, supported browsers, local progress, and resetting.
Does the game save my progress?
Your discovered elements and completion percentage are saved locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server and there is no account. Because the save lives on the device, a different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data looks like a fresh start. The workspace layout itself is not saved between reloads.
Can I play Little Chemist on mobile?
Yes. The layout is built for touch: drag elements with a finger, and the workspace pans so it never feels cramped. The library docks to the bottom in portrait and to the side in landscape.
How do I reset my discoveries?
Open the menu and choose Reset progress, then confirm with the second tap. That clears every discovered element and sets you back to the four base elements on this browser. It cannot be undone.
Can I play offline?
The game needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab playable without a network, but there is no dedicated offline app or installer.
Which browsers are supported?
Any current browser with JavaScript: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile versions. If elements do not respond, update the browser, allow scripts for this site, and reload.
